More of George Stöckhardt Translated

by Fr. Johann W. Caauwe

Dr. George Stöckhardt taught Old and New Testament exegesis full time at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis from 1887 until his death in 1913. In 1896 and 1899, he published volumes of commentary on the Bible History stories of the Old and New Testaments, respectively. The commentary is based on the morning devotions he conducted at the Seminary. Each brief section of commentary simply retells the story and provides an even more brief application to the Christian reader. Between the two volumes there are 645 sections.

Stöckhardt’s other published works include books of sermons for Advent (28 sermons based on Old Testament prophecies), the Passion (40 sermons in two volumes), and Gnade um Gnade, a collection of sermons for the Gospels of the year. His commentaries, on Isaiah 1–12, Romans, Epheisans, and 1 Peter, were all published after his 1900 mental breakdown, remarriage, and recovery.  All of these were published by CPH, except Gnade um Gnade, published the year after he died by NPH in Milwaukee.

I would love to see more of his work translated and published in English. I’m hoping to work through these Bible History stories one by one as they come up in my preparation for Sunday School, Bible Class, and sermon texts in the parish. I updated the page where I was posting the entries from a blog to page with links so that someone could more easily find a story. Still a work in progress. https://www.stjohnswoodlake.com/biblehistory

The image shows the Stöckhardt volumes I have on my shelf that still have original covers.
