With Luther...
“With Luther, we confess that “God’s Word cannot err” (LC, IV, 57). We therefore believe, teach and confess that since the Holy Scriptures are the Word of God, they contain no errors or contradictions but that they are in all their parts and words the infallible truth.”
So goes the beginning of the section on “The Infallibility of Scripture” in A Statement of Scriptural and Confessional Principles. A anniversary was missed last year, as 45 years ago last July the LCMS convention passed the document and confessed that “it was in all its parts, to be Scriptural and in accord with the Lutheran Confessions, and therefore a formulation which derives its authority from the Word of God and which expresses the Synod’s position on current doctrinal issues”.
Doctrinal issues never go away. We would do well to study the document again and have it at the ready as we confess the truth of God’s Word today.
