In his masterpiece The City of God, St. Augustine uses the term libido dominandi, which might be translated as “the lust for domination.” It is Augustine’s term for fallen man’s inclination to lord over others, to play God by seeking to control other people.

This is funny because it’s true. All too often, churches sound like the worst that corporate, bureaucratic America have to offer. It is as though we could all have corporate-speak bingo cards during district conventions and when we read various church publications.

When I get into discussions with people over the liturgy and traditional hymnody (over and against so-called “contemporary worship,”) a lot of the same arguments and assertions pop up.

While on the treadmill at the gym, I was listening to a podcast, A Word Fitly Spoken. This particular program was about Critical Theory, and it was hosted by the Revs. Willie Grills and Zelwin Heide. The guests were the Revs. Adam Koontz and David Buchs.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” At least if you believe the Byrds, King Solomon, and the Holy Ghost.

I often hear the argument that musical style is neutral when it comes to appropriateness for worship, and that the reason we in the Gottesdienst Crowd reject “contemporary worship” is simply because we just happen to like the organ and classical music.
