Explaining the Laity Shortage

In looking to explain and combat the current laity shortage, a lot of the discussions seem to miss the elephant in the parlor. I’ve read from various LCMS “influencers” that the problem is one of the following: too much liturgy, not enough pastors, not enough congregations, seminary is too hard, we need more lay church workers, too many conservatives, and the LCMS is too white.

But the real issue is bigger than the LCMS, and even bigger than Christendom. It is a worldwide phenomenon, and I think the following article is an interesting reflection on the actual root cause, and a better starting point for discussion than simply taking up one’s particular provincial talking points.

The real issue is grounded in the concept of status.
